Trace built 28.35 km of highway in neighboring Romania, now open to traffic

The project is funded by: PNRR (Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan)
Budget: 1 249 994 527 RON without VAT
Start date: 11 Aug 2022
End date: 17 Oct 2025
Employer: CNAIR S.A. (Romanian National Road Infrastructure Company, Romania)
Contractor: JV „Trace Group Hold“ PLC - SC CONI SRL

“Trace Group Hold” Plc is actively constructing infrastructure projects in Romania. In October 2025, a 29-kilometer section of the Ploiești–Buzău highway, LOT 2: Mizil – Pietroasele km 21+000 – km 49+350, Romania, was opened to traffic. On October 17, 2025, the highway section was officially open for cars, buses, and trucks.

The project, commissioned by CNAIR S.A. (the Romanian National Company for Road Infrastructure), was implemented by the JV “Trace Group Hold” Plc – SC CONI SRL, led by the Bulgarian company. Construction of the highway was financed under Romania’s PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan).

In building the Ploiești–Buzău highway, including 20 bridge structures, “Trace Group Hold” Plc applied intelligent construction techniques and solutions to create sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure. The project was designed by the Employer, CNAIR S.A., to ensure more efficient, rational, and appropriate use of natural resources in the highway construction. This approach allows for reduced costs and lower material consumption during the project’s execution.

During the construction process, Trace employed 3D scanning technologies and drone-based site surveys. In building the highway subgrade, the focus was on finding more environmentally friendly solutions and using materials and technologies that reduce the carbon footprint, such as geocells and geotextiles. Along the highway, Trace established a green forest belt, designed based on an analysis of meteorological data from the Ploiești and Buzău stations over the past 10 years. Snow protection belts were installed on the left side of the highway between km 21+000 and km 49+350 to block winter winds. In the Ploiești area, these winds primarily come from the west–northeast (W–NE) sector, while in the Buzău area, the predominant wind direction is west–east–northeast (W–ENE).

The constructed green buffers act as a physical barrier between the vehicles and the surrounding forested landscapes. They help preserve the ecosystems that are affected by the newly built roads.

Trace’s road construction teams carried out works designed to minimize pollution and runoff. This includes the highway platform waters, which may be contaminated by vehicle exhaust, tire wear, or accidental spills from leaking vehicles or accidents. Treatment facilities have been installed, including hydrocarbon separators, sedimentation tanks, retention basins, and other related infrastructure.

In the project, Trace carried out a specific task involving the identification and neutralization of unexploded ordnance.
