Engineering an intersection on two levels, "Mladost", Sofia

The project is funded by: European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
Budget: 8 857 104.77 BGN
Employer: Sofia Municipality

"Engineering (design and construction) of sites as per specified positions: Two-level junction "Andrei Saharov" Blvd. and "Andrei Lyapchev" Blvd.

The project is part of Sofia municipality for mitigation of the traffic issues in Sofia and is funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Its purpose is the trace of the currently existing boulevard "Andrei Saharov" in "Mladost 1" and its continuation at "St. Kiprian" Str. in "Mladost 2" to get connected and the crossing of "Andrei Lyapchev" Blvd. to be performed through four-branch junction at ground level and the direct direction at "Andrei Saharov" Blvd. to be performed through transfer at second level above "Andrei Lyapchev" Blvd. In order to achieve that a bride with length of 80 m is constructed. This is the facility that connects the two areas of "Mladost" and is targeted to divert the traffic from "Tsarigradsko Shose" before "Alexander Malinov" Blvd.

According to the requirements of the Employer, during the construction the currently existing regulation must be maintained and to minimally interfere with the traffic of "Andrei Lyapchev" Blvd.

The project has a pilot nature. This is the first metal bridge that is constructed for 30 years now in the capital and is targeted to show the advantages of the metal construction bridges:

·         reliability and long operation period (above 100 years);

·         low running costs;

·         modern architectural vision;

·         environmental friendliness (metal constructions are fully recyclable);

·         competitive cost value.

Design:

One of the main targets of the designers of "Via plan" OOD was the construction of a modern facility that fits in the architectural appearance of the area.  The selected variant is based on the good balance between aesthetics and construction efficiency. The main frame is achieved through collar beam, following the shape of the grade line of the road and two V-shaped columns.

Metal construction:

The design of the steel construction is prepared by a team of "Irkon" OOD. The road slab is split in 5 parts, the main pillars are of 2 parts and there are end pillars, which also are individual design elements.

The production of the metal construction was performed in the two production facilities of MSK in Pernik and in Kazichene. A trial installation was performed at the production facility – fitting of individual parts in order to ensure that the actual installation will be performed quickly and easily, without interfering with the traffic.

450 tons of steel were used for the production of the bridge. The installation on site is performed by mobile crane with loading capacity of 150 tons.
